Once a private country estate dating back to the early 20th century, Chanticleer opened to the public in 1993 and offers a diverse variety of garden spaces that appeal to all the senses.  They pride themselves in the garden experience and allow visitors to explore and discover all the grounds.  With that mantra in mind, they approached Jonathan Alderson Landscape Architects, Inc. to address a stepped and steep path adjacent to the main house terrace. The solution was to replace the path with a fully accessible elevated walkway that weaves its way in and out of the established woodland.  The design ramps down over 30 feet of vertical elevation, and it features places to stop, sit, and enjoy the view.  The ramp’s surface is porous, and the footings are designed to have the least impact on the hillside and existing woodland.  The lawn hillside has been replaced with warm-season grasses and multi-stem flowering trees. The woodland has remained intact and allows visitors to walk amongst the trees at various heights from the ground.  Established garden relics remain and have been incorporated into the design as well.
